Behind the Veil Cacho Llige Nuptials

Cool weather, Christmas spirit in the air, shopping madness, epic Manila traffic, a few ingredients that make December a very busy time of any year. Christmas preparations and families coming home for a celebration make it an ideal month to get married.  They bring in the warmth and cheer of the Holiday season and the festive Christmas decorations alone bring another cheer dimension.  In another blog, I’ll list down top reasons why having a wedding in December is not being selfish.  Here is another instalment of my Behind the Veil series with Mercedes Cacho.

This is what Mercedes had to say regarding her wedding preparations for her big day.

1)  Please tell me about yourself, what do you do for a living , what are your passions, and hobbies?

Those shoes!!!! Love her style!!!!

My name is Mercedes Cacho. I am the Creative Director for InFrame Media Productions Australia. I’d consider myself a very visual and creative person, so my hobbies are sketching and painting. My biggest passion is styling and fashion.

2) How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist)? What made you want to work with me?

You were recommended by my family.

3)  How did you like the outcome of our time together, specially on your special day?

Acie and her team were wonderful, very professional.

4)  What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love?  Could you share that photo with us?image1.jpeg

5)  What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

Getting ready with Acie, I love her face masks, they were so refreshing!!!

I normally use a mask with Hyaluronic and collagen in it because I want the face of the Bride to be soothed, and hydrated and appear brighter. You can get this at any Watsons branch.

6) Favorite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

I really liked the lipstick Acie and I chose.  It was a subtle rose pink color from Project Vanity “Woke up like this”.

In collaboration with Project Vanity and Pink Sugar, this is one of the colors they came up with. Perfect for Brides.

7.  Any bridal tips you want to share with future Brides planning their wedding?

You will probably break out a week before the wedding from the stress of it all.  If you can, I suggest going away for a short relaxing weekend, or do whatever you can to avoid it.  Apply a face mask or get a professional facial.

Jade Roller for Face - Anti Wrinkle 100% Natural Jade Stone Roller - Anti Aging Skin Slimming Massager - Original Real Double Jade Facial Roller - Massage Therapy Tool for Neck and Eyes Beauty
I use this in conjunction with a face sheet or mask to really make the product sink in. It also relaxes, and tones the face and prepares it for th make-up application. It reduces puffiness specially when the Bride has shed some tears the night before. Make sure you are getting the real one made out of jade and not plastic. Jade is cool to touch.. I put this in the refrigerator the night before for extra cooling effect on the face.

8.  What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

Sleep in a little longer.  I was so excited, I woke up at 5 am.  Acie arrived at the scheduled 9 am call time.  I could’ve gotten another solid hour!

9.  Any beauty rituals you did or received you want to share?

Image result for dermalogica rustans
This is my personal gift to the Bride. Highly recommended as part of her skincare regimen before the big day, I want my Brides glowing and radiant. Head to Dermalogica Rustans for their menu of services.

I never get used to get regular facials.  However it was highly recommended by Acie.  I’m so glad I did it!  My skin loved it and I found the experience to be so relaxing!  Now that I’m back home in Australia, I now book facials regularly.

10.  Favourite Photo of you during the wedding and why.

This is one of my favourite photos, it reminds me how beautiful the whole evening was!  All the stress of planning turned into happy moments which made all of this possible.

Behind the Veil… Benedicto Rodriguez Nuptials

Tis wedding season!!  I met Raisa through her mother, Rosette Gana Benedicto, her parents and mine go a long way, they were friends since way back in the 60’s, maybe even longer.

A call came to me through her younger sister Carmela Gana Araullo that Rosette’s daughter is getting married and they were asking for my rates.  If you read the story below, it turns out her mom Rosette really wanted me to do the hair and makeup for Raisa!  The last time I saw Rosette was from the Velada.  Velada is a jubilee celebration of the homecoming of the alumnae culminating in an evening of song and dance.  Our alma mater is the Assumption College!  I was deeply touched since I haven’t heard from Rosette in so many years and she remembered me for her daughter’s special day.

Oh Raisa, thank you for making it so easy for me, Rosette You raised a good daughter right here.

Below is our conversation with Raisa.

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

“Hi! I’m Raisa Benedicto. I’m a Pediatric dentist by profession (but one of the lost boys from Neverland by heart). I like to read and play tennis during my spare time. and I LOVE dogs.”

2. How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist)? What made you want to work with me?

“When my mom heard I got engaged, she instantly said, “We HAVE to get Acie as our make out artist.” My mom trusted you, so I trusted you. and like any millennial, I immediately stalked your portfolio on Instagram – definitely liked what I saw! and the rest is history!”

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

“It was perfect! Although I was a little frazzled on the day (as all typical brides are) you made me feel so comfortable and distracted. I appreciated all the small talk and the explanations to help keep the edge off. “

4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

“I’m probably still on a wedding high, so it’s pretty hard to pick a favorite one. The day went by so fast; it was such a blur. What did stand out, though, was the surprise father daughter dance, we had planned for the guests.

This photo isn’t very flattering of us, but it captures our dynamic together as father and daughter. We’re both not performers and definitely not dancers, but it was a fun production and even more fun bonding time spent with my dad.”

5). What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

“Honestly, I’m not the type who wears make up or fixes myself up everyday. In fact, I just recently learned how to use foundation and concealer. That being said, the entire time I was being made up felt like a dream to me. I especially felt my best once I stepped into my finished dress for the first time.”

6) Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

“For some reason, what really stuck with me was the face mask and the facial massage. It wasn’t something I normally witnessed during bridal make up sessions. I enjoyed being pampered.”

Before the makeup application I apply a mask to the bride’s face and use a Jade roller on top to massage the product in the face.

7) Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

“LET GO on the day. There’s no point in stressing over little details. Everything is going to be perfect whatever happens. The wedding is just for the festivities, but don’t forget what the day’s focus is truly about. “

8) What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

“Maybe having an airconditioned prep room – that was one thing I overlooked/didn’t bother to think about. Either way, the villa I stayed in was breezy enough. I really wouldn’t have changed anything.”

9) Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

“The complimentary facial spa treatment I got from Dermalogica (c/o you, Tita Acie), was absolutely FANTASTIC. It was so relaxing and soothing, just what I needed right before the wedding.”

Photo from Rustans Beauty Source

10) Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

“I don’t usually enjoy having my photo taken, but that day I had enough confidence to pose and emote. My photographers were amazing at making me look like I knew what I was doing, but the real MVP was my HMUA for making me, not just look, but also feel, like I deserved to be in the spotlight. I loved that my make up was so light and natural-looking that my freckles were showing through. My eye bags seem non-existent!”

Kris Bacani Bridal Masterclass

“A class taught by someone who has expert special skills and knowledge in a specific area” this is the definition of a Masterclass according to the Cambridge Dictionary . I first met Kris at a Makeup Designory seminar a few years ago and she discussed what being a makeup artist entails and the next class I saw her was in another Makeup Forever seminar again, discussing makeup related topics.

Kris Bacani held her provincial masterclasses  for Bridal makeup during the month of May 2018 and my friend Marissa Narvaez of The Makeup Central invited me to join her in Baguio for this class.

This class was sponsored by Makeup Forever and by Lemons and Olives, a Mediterranean cafe in Baguio City.  She was assisted by Paolo Carantes San Juan a former student of hers.

Registration Area

A most awaited surprise, the Loot bag!

Makeup Forever Buffet

Mich Molina in a very simple bridal look minus the lipstick. Sorry I wasn’t able to capture her finished.

Skin Prep and More, Makeup primers, Contour palettes. HD Blushes, and Makeup forever finishing powders

Leaving no inch of space, these are the colors she used for the demo to create a day and evening look.

Inside the Loot Bag were sample sizes of Makeup Forever Sens eye remover, HD Concealer, HD Foundation, Red Lipstick and more sample sizes of the Matte Primer, Water Blend and Ultra HD Foundation.
This was the second part of the Demo, the Airbrush Bridal look for evening. Photo from Kris Bacani IG.

TIPS for Bridal Makeup

  • Encourage a trial hair and makeup before the wedding, that way you address all the issues, wants and needs of the Bride that will pertain to her look, color scheme and wedding theme.

  • SkinCare is the most important step in preparing the Bride’s skin.  Her skin should be cleansed, toned and moisturised according to her skin type.  A Facial is a must and should be done not later than 2 weeks.  Abrasive facials should be avoided so as not to cause further breakouts in the skin.

  • If there are imperfections in the skin, correct them first with the appropriate correctors, or color neutralisers before applying any foundation or base, apply the correct primer that’s suited for her skin type.

  • Apply highlights to the face first before the contour shades.  Set face with powder avoiding the eye area.

This loose powder can be used as a contour shade.

Laura Mercier Translucent Powder is Kris’s go to setting powder. Now I see the hype.

  • Apply a cream cheek color with your fingers and and blend.  Layer this with a powder blush and use a stippling brush to blend and remove any harsh lines

  • Spray the face with a Mist and Fix spray or setting spray to add longevity to the makeup’s staying power.

  • Use waterproof products to withstand elements like sweat, tears and humidity.

  • Apply  lashes that are appropriate to the eye shape and look of the makeup.  Here is a sample of the lashes she uses.

  • After the eye makeup is done, clean up under the eyes, apply the concealer to conceal and brighten the undereye area.  Set with powder.

  • Apply lipstick.  Use a lip liner to fill in the lips and and add the lipstick.

  • When using airbrush makeup, its best to use a silicone primer first and a silicone base.  It provides a skin like texture and is not cakey.

Citi Pharma Skincare Haul – I got you guys covered…. at the least

Have you heard of this Sephora like mecca shop Citi Pharma?  I was on vacation recently and Paris was one of our destinations and I googled French Pharmacy products and this store popped up numerous times.

Citi Pharma is a discount parapharmacy store that sells French beauty products, medicines and homeopathic medicines.   Remember Embryolisse?  Avene?  Nuxe?  One of the makeup artists that I follow on Youtube is Lisa Eldridge and she advertises her skincare products in her videos.  She has introduced me to Embryolisse and La Roche Posay moisturizers.

Here are a few tips when you go shopping in City Pharma.

Arrive early,  they open at 8:30 am on weekdays and 9 am on Saturdays.  As the day progresses, so do the people that go in.  Did you see the throng of people I had to squeeze into?  The entrance is quite narrow and there is a security guard that controls the number of people coming in.  I arrived just before noon and yes a mass of humanity greeted me at the door.

Make a list beforehand on the items you want to buy.  Aisles are narrow.  Take photos so you can show the pharmacists what you want if French is not your second language.  Some of them speak in English but they are busy attending to tourists, you have to catch their attention quickly.

Head to the aisles that have the cult favorites like Bioderma, Embryolisse, Nuxe and Caudalie.  These run out really fast.  Did you know that you are also given a limited amount of bottles to purchase?  Only 2-3 sets of the prepackaged items are allowed so head to this area first.

Don’t forget to bring your passport to avail of the tax refund.  They will not process your refund if you bring a copy of your passport.

Remain Calm.  It’s like a market inside.  Ask questions and utilize the help of the roving pharmacists, they really make good recommendations.  If you are with your spouse or boyfriend, direct them to the cafe across the street to have coffee and a croissant and macaroon while waiting for you.  It usually takes 1  to 1  1/2 hours to navigate this gem of a store.

The products sold here are similar to drugstore products wherein they are not as expensive as the branded ones like Guerlain, La Prairie, La Mer etc.  I must admit I spent at least Euros 290!  Expensive but I was able to get a 12% VAT rebate, so it was still cheaper than when I got them online or here.  Sorry big Manila department stores, but I understand taxes and markups are taken into play here.  My saving grace is, when I run out of 1 or 2 products, it will be available here for me to grab when I need to replenish my kit.

Euro exchange to Peso is roughly around 66 Euros to Php1.00  I ‘ll indicate the Php price to reflect the 12% rebate.

Embryolisse Moisturizer in 75 ml and 30 ml.  Php695.00 Php350.00

Called the Holy Grail of moisturizers by makeup artists worldwide, this was sold as as a 2-1 product.  I just bought an extra small one for when I condense my kit.   I use this as a moisturizer for those with normal to dry skin, I avoid the nose, forehead and chin area.  I use a separate matte moisturizer on the T zone if needed.  This acts as my primer before the application of the base or foundation.  TIP:  Mix a small amount to any dense, thick foundation to sheer it out and make it easier to blend and it gives the skin a dewy effect.  You can also use this as an eraser when you do your eye flicks with a liquid liner, dip your q-tip into this and apply to the area.  It may be used in the under eye area when dry and when you have no eye cream available.

Embryolisse Hydra Mat Emulsion Php 870.00

For oily and combination skin, this is a good moisturizer to use, Like what it says, it mattifies the T zone and allows the skin to breathe without the heaviness of a creamy moisturizer.

Bioderma Micellar Cleansing Water for Combination Skin Php 1,160.00 for 2 and Php 265.00 for the 100 ml.

Hands down, the best makeup remover.  Does not sting, removes all traces of makeup quickly and doesnt leave an uncomfortable film on the face.  TIP:  If you dont have a toner, this takes the place of it.  You can also use this to remove undereye shadow fallout before applying your concealer, specially when you’re doing a smoky eye.

Vichy Purete Thermale Tonic Php 585.00

My favorite toner, it works for combination skin and also for sensitive skin.  Does not sting and doesnt have alcohol.

Embryolisse Secret de maquilleurs eye contour stick Php695.00

I’m a big fan of eye creams specially that firms the upper lid.  I believe in prevention first, as we age, our lids get droopy and to avoid this, I use this to firm and delay the drooping stage.

Bioderma Crealine Yeux Creme Php 620.00, Vichy Neovadiol Contouren eye cream Php 1, 045.00 Embryolisse Smoothing Eye Contour Care Php 650.00

Fanatic about sagging lids, I personally use the Vichy one because of the metal applicator that makes it cool to apply.  I apply a small amount on the eye and use the metal tip to massage the area.  These eye creams are good for keeping wrinkles at crows feet at bay.  Infused with vitamins and all the good stuff, its safe to use morning and night.

La Roche Posay SeroZinc Php 350.00

I got hooked on this through the webinar that I attended with Kevin James Bennett, and he recommended this specially for those who have very oily skin.  Contains Zinc, it also helps tone down redness in the face.  Those with Rosacea can benefit from this before their makeup application.  Can be used in place of a toner.   TIP:  Store this in the refrigerator before spraying on the face

Caudalie Beauty Elixir Php 700.00

This toning mist tightens pores, refreshes face and sets makeup.  it has rosemary extract, mint and other essential oils to prepare the face for the next makeup application.  TIP:  Men can use this after they shave and when you’ve overpowdered you face, spray this and this will refresh your makeup and lessen the opacity of the powder.

Darphin Melaperfect Hyperpigmentation Php 2735.00

This was the most expensive skincare that I bought, I have the beginnings of round pigmentation on my face and since I dont want to subject myself to invasive procedures yet, I’ll take my time to use something less expensive.  I consulted the pharmacists there and this is what they recommended for me.  I began using this during my trip and it has somewhat even out my skin tone a bit.  I use this only in the morning.  It has a light consistency and doesnt feel heavy at all.

Talika Eyebrow Php1,740.00 and Eyelash serums Php 845.00

I have sparse eyelashes and this brand was recommended to me and we’ll see in a few months if these work.  My eyebrows are not yet microblade ready yet, I still dont have the need for it yet since I can still do my eyebrows with a pencil and shadow,  the only sparse area is the front brow which is getting a little sparse.  I hope this works.

Biafine Php 360.00

I bought this cream mainly for superficial burns and sunburn and post dermatolic procedures.  If you’re traveling to a very cold country, TIP, you can use this as face mask to bring back hydration on the face.  I’ve also used this on my feet specially around the heel area when your feet start to crack.  Repairs instantly.

Homeoplasmine Php 370.00

Another cult classic favored by makeup artists, this is an all around balm.  It was first used as a cream for breastfeeding mothers when their nipples get sore, they apply this balm to soothe the redness and inflammation.  TIP: This can also be used in the face when you want to add a glow on the high points of the face, like the upper cheekbones to give a dewy effect.  Tap on the face and dont rub.  This is also used as a lip conditioner, hydrates, smoothes chapped lips.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip balm Php 380.00

This lip balm is a life saver, it’s like a matte lip balm but hydrates and restores smoothness to the lips.  The only thing I don’t like is the packaging, a bit bulky but I will depot in a small container to put in my kit.  TIP:  For those matte lipstick lovers, apply this before your lipstick and it wont be as drying.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Dry oil Php 1100.00 and Shimmering oil Php 1230.00

Similar to Argan oil, this oil can be used on the face, hair and body.  Its dry oil that doesnt leave any residue on the face.  I’ve mixed this with my foundation and it is not greasy or sticky, safe to use on sensitive skin.  I love the old fashioned glass bottle and the spray applicator.  I have small bottles that I can transfer them into when you’re travelling.  TIP:  The shimmering oil can be used as a bronzer to the collarbone and applied on the outer perimeter of the face using a foundation brush or sponge and blend.

Assorted Skin relief creams  price ranges Php 200.00 – Php 400.00

I love purchasing these creams for insect bites, balms for sore muscles, bruise creams.  These are difficult to find here and most of them require prescriptions.  These are offered on the shelf and they work, because they are homeopathic medicines that are plant based and work immediately on the skin and body.  Applied in small doses, they are potent enough to heal and repair tissues and wounds.  These are like my first aid go tos and can be used in any situations.

Now that you’ve seen what I hauled, yes this is what I lugged around till we got to Spain.  Before leaving for my vacation, I checked out the prices and availability of some the french skincare products here in Manila specially Bioderma, Embryolisee  and Nuxe and Avene.   Like I said, prices here are double or maybe triple due to taxes and markups.  These items really made my luggage heavy but I still realized that I got a good deal on what I bought but knowing what I know is available here, I will restock my kit and purchase them here.  A Paris trip is nice, sigh, if only it was that easy.

Let me know what items you’ve discovered in City Pharma.

Behind the Veil: Once on this Island Arguelles Hosking Nuptials

Boracay is all over the news nowadays with the government shutting the island down for its much needed cleanup and rehabilitation.  My take is that, if we want to preserve and enjoy the natural beauty of the island, tough love and rule of law should prevail.  Thing is, I’m in favour of rehabilitating it in stages.  Clean it, destroy the structures  violating the 30 meter easement, penalise the resort owners and developers who are violating the rules regarding their non compliance with the waste water and sewage facilities and let the island breathe.    I am also not in favour of having big party events and Casinos in Boracay.  A beach to me is meant to calm the senses, recharge, slow things down and give you a perspective that a big city cannot give you.  The simpler things in life is what matters.  Close it down and let it heal and regenerate.   Let’s do our share in preserving what’s left of the island so we can enjoy its beauty.

February 24 was the last weekend I was going to enjoy what’s left of the island beauty, and Lady Luck was on the side of Belle and Dan.  They met on this island a few years ago hence the venue.   That weekend was perfect, weather cooperated despite rains in the forecast.  Here are my postcards.

The best sunsets will always be in Boracay.

Not feverish at all, gin bulag to the rescue. A refreshing treat after a long day.

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, passions?

” At present, I am a hotelier, specifically handling VIP guests at the Club Lounge of the Marriott Hotel Manila. I’m really into the arts whether it be performing on stage, or working behind the scenes.”

2. How did you find out about me (Acie Fores Makeup Artist)? What made you want to work with me?

“Very highly recommended by family members ;)”

3. How did you like the outcome of our time together, for your special day?

“I absolutely loved how everything was just effortless on my end, Acie and her team were just so easy to get along with. I did not have to worry about the overall my look and everyone in my entourage.”

With Mother of the Bride Christine, Mother Hen to all.

Marissa Narvaez a fellow Makeup Artist helped with the hair and makeup requirements of the entourage.

Isabel’s Dude of Honor and Bridesmaids. Yes that’s right, Dude of Honor, Miguel Ayuyao. Rikki Suarez was the other Makeup artist with me who also glammed up the bridesmaids.  Jm Martinez and Mirro Juico Kishi were the hair stylists.

4. What’s one special memory you have of your wedding that you love? Could you share that photo with us?

“The fact that we were able to organise a Flash Mob dance for my groom, teaching all his family and friends in the UK via video messaging was all worth the surprise. The best part was, we were able to get him up on his feet as well.”

Dancing to the tune of Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake

5. What was a good beauty moment for you during the wedding day itself?

“The best beauty moment was that even if we were outdoors and sweaty from all the fun, excitement, and tears of joy, my make up did not run at all! It was when I saw all the photos of when we were out on the shore watching the fireworks, I knew it was really warm but my face stayed really fresh.”

6) Favourite beauty product, application used during your wedding and why?

Those Japanese eye pads are a life saver! Especially when you’re so tired from all the preparations the day before, it didn’t matter at all, as those babies made my eye bags go away.

Q10 eye pads are hydrating and lifting. If you have puffy eye bags, this calms the eye area down and feels cool. Leave it for a good 10 minutes, any residue left, massage in the eye area. I would also recommend putting this in the refrigerator to maximise its effectivity.

7) Any bridal tips you want to share for future brides planning their wedding?

“Definitely invest in a facial treatment regularly before the wedding. This will make you look radiant especially during those close up shots.”

8) What is one thing you could change during your wedding preparation?

“I wish I had more time to prepare and be ready before my glam shots.”

Glowing and radiating pure joy

9) Any beauty rituals you did or received that you want to share?

“A glorious facial from Bioessence! It did wonders.”  I tried the Oxygen Intensive Treatment and my skin never felt so good.   Thank you for this wonderful gift Acie!

10) Favourite photo of you during the wedding and why.

“One of my favourite photos of my wedding would be during our first dance. The photographer simply captured what to me true happiness is.”

Bliss

Event roundup Mr and Miss Chinatown 2017 and Albert Andrada Fashion Shows

In Chinese culture, August is usually the month in the lunar calendar that is called the Ghost month, beginning in the 15th day of the 7th month where ghosts and spirits including the ones of the deceased ancestors come out.  The Chinese belief is that no business transactions or any of its kind are to be conducted during this period, no planning of long trips, no building and renovations in homes, no transferring of office should be conducted, as superstition dictates that the spirits should be appeased during this period.  For the year 2017, it began August 22 until September 19.

UMAP members broke this superstition and got to work on the Mr and Miss Chinatown pageant.   Inglot Cosmetics was the official makeup sponsor, headed by Marketing head Alyssa Nicole Alumno and hair sponsor was Revlon Professional Brands Philippines.

Mr and Miss Chinatown is a yearly pageant that promotes Chinese Filipino culture that aims to highlight shared values while advocating the excellence of today’s Chinoy youth expressed through the spirit of the arts, entrepreneurship,  and academics.  The theme this year was #NewDynasty which included Filipino Chinese members from the provincial and International community which made the pageant bigger and bolder in their search for the best cultural ambassador.

TIPS ON WORKING IN A FASHION SHOW OR PAGEANT

  •  Working in a pageant, or a fashion show is a lot of fun and tiring at the same time.  Work quickly with less chit chat and try to follow the pegs given.

  •  Models are human too, they get tired, cranky and hungry.  It’s not personal, try to make them feel better with the skill of your hands and delivering what’s needed.  Offering them a drink of water or giving them a mini facial prior to a makeup application does wonders for their disposition.

  • Listen to the cues and direction of the production team.  It creates a smooth working flow and it is the opportune time to iron out or clarify questions you may have.

  • Keep your makeup kit and station neat at all times.  I know this is difficult when you are working on a tight area with many faces to work on, but a messy station speaks volumes about your professionalism.

  • Do ask permission from the model or talent if it is ok to take some photos and post on social media. Ask the lead person in the production and makeup team if this is ok.  Ask for designated hashtags if possible and post accordingly.

  • Offer to touch up talents or models just before they go out, even if she or he was not the one you made up.  Time is of the essence, you need to be waiting at the wings with powder, lipstick and tissue on hand for last calls.

Make Up Trends for Brides [Video]

Here’s a video interview that I gave a couple years back on what I believe are really the timeless bridal trends. As a makeup artist, while I do believe in going with current trends, there are certain foolproof makeup and beauty to-dos that are always going to be at the heart of a solid bridal “look.”

Beauty Editorial for Marche Magazine

After being in the industry for almost 8 years, I’ve found my rhythm, as captured here by Marche Magazine. My style of makeup is on the soft, romantic side. I want to differentiate my artwork, going softer, a more subtle way. I think for us makeup artists it’s “practice, practice, practice.” Always better yourself.

J.Cat Beauty: The newest kid on the makeup block

Beauty & Momness: Tips for moms on everyday beauty

IMG_1625

Acie Fores, together with the UMAP team members headed by Charisma Vergara President of UMAP had the privilege to be a keynote makeup artist assistant at the Beauty & Momness event in Evia Center this weekend.  Like all harried mothers with no time to spare for themselves, pampering oneself is key in keeping your sanity intact.  Beauty is not an option but an outlet to express your creativity and spark an inner joy that makes you feel you are right in this world.

In this workshop, UMAP member volunteers taught the ladies how to do their own makeup from skincare, choosing the right products that match their skin type, using the proper tools, applying proper methods and techniques to create a polished looking face ready to face any challenge.

Mom Beauty Tips:

  1.  Skincare is essential in creating a good makeup application.  The 4 key steps of a good skincare routine is cleansing, toning, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
IMG_1830
Biore products were at the forefront of skincare as they were one of the major sponsors of the event.

2.  Choosing the right foundation or Base for your skin depends on the skin tone and type of skin.  Usually when shopping for your base, choose 3 shades of foundation closest to your skin tone and swatch each shade from the jaw line extending to your neck.  When blended, the closes  shade that blends with your neck is the right shade for you.

IMG_1836
LA Girl and Benefit Cosmetics were also on hand to provide the ladies with great looking skin.

IMG_1839
This LA Girl BB cream is a great all in one multitasker, it protects, hydrates, and blends easily,

3)  Choose earthy tones for your eye color palette.  For newbies in the makeup sphere, warm browns, plums are your best bets for our brown colored eyes.  They are complementary colors that bring out the eyes.

4)  #Kilayislife

When you have groomed brows, half of your work is done.  Groomed brows are easier to fill in whether your preference is a pencil or shadow.  They frame the face and if you’re in hurry, killer brows and a good lipstick color is all you need.

featuredbrow
Start your brows at the end of your nose (1), the arch is above the iris of the eye, and your brow should end diagonally from your nostril to the end of your eye (3).

5)  A good lipstick color that also suits your skin tone is all you need to complete basic everyday look.  You can also wear bright colors like red or pink depending on your mood for the day.

Your lipstick palette may look like this, if you’re the type to experiment and mix shades to create that perfect custom blend color just for you.

Out with the old: Do a makeup kit detox!

IMG_9577

As a makeup artist, I deal with two things specifically: Makeup and hygiene. To be honest, I’ve seen some pretty iffy practices in my world of makeup artistry that have given me the chills! Since makeup is all about enhancing our facial features and skin, hygiene has to come into play, but it is a very personal matter and often a sensitive subject. But it has to be discussed, because the fact is simple: If it’s not something I’d put on my body, I’m not going to put it on my clients. It should also be the same for you: If the products you’re using aren’t hygienic and clean (and will likely compromise the health of your skin), then don’t use it!

I recommend doing a proper “makeup kit detox” routinely so that you do not compromise your personal hygiene or your looks! Let’s go per product in your makeup kit, to make things easier.

1. Check and toss products past their expiry dates.

Makeup, like any other product made from natural ingredients, has a proper shelf life. If you use products close to or after their expiry date, then you will likely have to deal with microscopic elements that are on these products, which may find their way to your skin. We’re talking mold (yikes), yeast (ew), bacteria and germs that can lead to skin infections and other complications.

As a rule, you should throw out your makeup products as follows:

  • Mascara: Three months maximum for mascara, because its bottle is the perfect host environment for bacteria. Using three-month old mascara increases your chances for eye infections like stys. They also become chalky after three months, making them caky on your lashes.
  • Eyeshadows, liners: Pencil liners can last up to two years, with regular sharpening. Cream shadows should be thrown out after six months, due to water content, which means bacteria and yeast can more easily thrive.
  • Lip makeup: Lip glosses should be thrown out after two years because (1) they lose their quality over time (i.e. fade in color, less adherent), and (2) gloss containers attract bacteria because their are damp.
  • Face powders, cream foundations: Six months for liquids; two years for powders. Over time, liquid products become breeding ground for bacteria. Powders have more longevity, but they will be more prone to crumbling and caking the older they get.
  • Brushes, accessories, sponges: Wash and thoroughly dry your brushes and sponges every week, to avoid the growth of bacteria.

The number one rule to ensure the hygienic quality of your makeup? Maintain good habits. Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly before you use a product. This is the case with palettes that you use with your fingers, or tubes of cream foundation. Also, if you have an infection, like sore eyes or cold sores in your mouth: Throw away or stop using certain products. Don’t use the same tube of mascara again after you’ve had a sty. Don’t re-use lip products if you have a cold sore. If you have a zit, don’t use your makeup brush to apply product. Instead use a cotton-tipped swab or disposable sponge to apply makeup from a foundation cake. Avoid going back and forth from the product to the affected area!
